The Sweet Experience

6 delicious and nutritious alternatives to honey

Author: Dr Rita Trakhtman, cosmetic dentist, East St Kilda

Honey, agave syrup, golden syrup, jam and sugar.

These are common toppings people add to their smoothies, porridge and yoghurt. Here is a list of tasty toppings that not only are bursting with flavour but they will make you feel good too.

1. Fresh fruit

My favourite is strawberries, raspberries and bananas. You can mix it up for extra fun.

If the fruit is out of season or you want a cheaper or more convenient option, try frozen fruit.

Avoid dried fruit as they are just forms of concentrated sugar and they’re sticky, so they’re end up in your teeth for hours.

2. Cinnamon

3. Ricotta cheese

It’s naturally sweet and light. Quark cheese is slightly heavier and more filling. You can also have cottage cheese (it’s a bit sour and not as sweet). The ricotta cheese from Coles/ Safeway deli tastes nicer than the pre-packaged types.

3. Peanut butter

Check the ingredients. Get the one that has 100% peanuts (otherwise there is added sugar, oil and salt).

4. Coconut oil

Opt for the refined, cold pressed, extra-virgin one.

5. Turmeric

A pinch of turmeric adds a zest of flavour. You only need a little bit as it’s quite strong.

6. Mixed spice

A combination of nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon
